Imprivata, Gemalto and Intercede Join Forces To Deliver Increased Value for Smart Cards for NHS Infrastructures

LEXINGTON, MA – 4^th June 2007 - Imprivata®, Inc. (www.imprivata.com), the enterprise authentication and access management appliance company, today announced a partnership with Gemalto and Intercede to deliver smart card management and enterprise single sign-on services to customers in the UK healthcare market. Imprivata’s OneSign appliance will support access to the applications provided by Connecting for Health using smart cards from Gemalto and with credentials issued by Intercede’s MyID®. This smart card and credential can then be used to provide strong two-factor authentication and single sign-on to multiple locally provided applications belonging to individual NHS Trusts.

Integrating secure credential and device management with strong authentication and enterprise single sign-on delivers greater efficiency, tighter security and ease of access for end-users. The relationship between Gemalto, Intercede and Imprivata delivers an improved identity management workflow solution for individual users and ensures that they can access their approved applications quickly and securely, whether they are locally hosted, or off-site.

Currently, users have to enter their PIN alongside using their smart card for access to the nationally-provided applications as well as entering passwords for entry into local applications when one is opened. With the combined solution, users will only have to present their smart card and enter their PIN once at the start of their working session. Following this single authentication, the Imprivata OneSign appliance automatically presents the user’s credentials to application log-in screens when they are opened across both local and national NHS applications. Once the user is finished at a particular terminal, the smart card is removed and the user’s account is automatically locked. This removes potential inefficiencies for employees caused by forgotten passwords during the working day while also ensuring security.

The OneSign appliance manages all authentication access and single sign-on activities, and this data can be used to generate reports on individual user activity, application usage across an organisation and even when users are sharing the same password details between each other.
