OneSign Secure Walk-Away
What it is
Imprivata OneSign Secure Walk-Away® lowers the risk of data breaches and improves care provider satisfaction by automatically locking workstations when care providers leave and re-authenticates them upon return. Whether they're gone for minutes or hours, the system takes providers back to exactly where they left off.
Our secret? Camera-based, active presence detection and facial recognition. OneSign Secure Walk-Away eliminates the need to manually lock workstations or use frustrating and unreliable inactivity timers — both of which can lead to more log ins and the risk of charting under the wrong patient ID or user credentials.
Why it matters
It can be challenging to protect patient data on workstations in open public areas like patient floors. Care providers are frequently called away to emergencies or to answer questions, leaving workstations vulnerable to unauthorized or accidental access. By increasing the risk of data breaches and charting errors, this situation can impact both HIPAA compliance and patient safety regulations.
How it works
When a care provider logs into the workstation, OneSign Secure Walk-Away uses an off-the-shelf webcam to create a unique facial template for that individual. Active presence technology tracks the user in front of the workstation. When they move out of the camera's sight, the workstation is automatically locked to prevent unauthorized viewing.
When the care provider comes back into view of the camera, OneSign Secure Walk-Away compares their face to the saved facial template. The care provider is then instantly re-authenticated and returned to their information. The template is discarded at the end of the session, and a new template is created each time a user logs in.
