Simplify No Click Access to Virtual Desktops with Imprivata OneSign ProveID Embedded

Today from VMworld®, Imprivata announced Imprivata OneSign® ProveID Embedded to enhance fast, secure No Click Access® to electronic medical records (EMRs) and other clinical applications within virtual desktop environments.

So what’s the big deal?

Simply put, Imprivata OneSign ProveID Embedded is the missing piece to maximizing the benefits of desktop virtualization, especially for zero client devices.  

From a technical perspective, Imprivata OneSign ProveID Embedded, which is based on architecture initially developed in collaboration with Texas Instruments, integrates directly into thin and zero client devices. A small loader embedded in the firmware checks for an Imprivata OneSign appliance on startup, then downloads the latest agent, simplifying deployment or replacement. When a newer version of the agent is available, IT simply copies the new agent onto the Imprivata OneSign Appliance. The clients check in periodically, download the new agent, and then during quiet time when not in use, will update the agent in the background. No reboot required, no downtime.

If reduced maintenance and improved security are key messages for thin and zero clients, then Imprivata OneSign ProveID Embedded supports this implicitly.

While the improved efficiency and increased productivity are benefits typically difficult to quantify, Aivars Apsite, technology strategist at Metro Health Hospital in Wyoming, Mich., has calculated a hard return on investment (ROI) for deploying VMware Horizon View combined with Imprivata OneSign—Aivars estimates that the hospital’s virtualized desktop environment supported by the fast, secure access enabled by Imprivata saves more than $2.3 million annually.

Initially, Imprivata OneSign ProveID Embedded will be integrated with the IGEL UD2-LX MultiMedia Universal Desktop Thin Client and the HP t410 Smart Zero Client, and through support for Intel x86 processor architecture, future versions of Imprivata OneSign ProveID Embedded will integrate with HP’s t510 and t610 Flexible Thin Client products as well as with IGEL’s UD3, UD5 and UD9 Universal Desktop Linux Thin Client product lines.
