For healthcare IT leaders charged with balancing the clinical need for more efficient technologies with the compliance and security requirements to safeguard protected health information (PHI), “The Imprivata Report on the Economic Impact of Inefficient Communications in Healthcare” provides a useful guide to understanding how communications inefficiency impacts provider workflows and the patient care process.

Providers waste an average of 35 minutes per shift in workflows such as admissions, transfers, and emergency response coordination. These time wastages are due to the inefficient communication problems of pagers. Such wastage translates into an annual loss of about $1.75 million per U.S. hospital and more than $11 billion, industry-wide.

Nearly $1 million could be saved per hospital per year by replacing pagers with secure text messaging for clinical communications during three critical workflows:

  • patient admissions
  • coordinating emergency response teams
  • patient transfers

This is among of the key findings of a Ponemon Institute study, which surveyed more than 400 U.S. healthcare providers to quantify the productivity and economic impact of the continued reliance on pagers and other outdated communications technologies.
