Electronic prescribing for controlled substances (EPCS) has become more important than ever for MEDITECH hospitals, especially given the recent surge of state and federal regulatory requirements. To date, 17 states now mandate EPCS, and the federal SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act requires EPCS for any controlled substance prescribed through a Medicare Part D program, starting in January 2021. What’s more, Walmart has announced that starting in January 2020, it will only accept electronic prescriptions for controlled substances at its pharmacies.
To enable EPCS, organizations must meet the unique, specific, and complex DEA requirements. These requirements are designed to track and audit the connection between practitioners and the signatures they use for EPCS orders. They include provider identity proofing, logical access control, two-factor authentication, and comprehensive recordkeeping and reporting requirements.
Understanding these requirements is essential to ensuring a fully compliant EPCS process. At the same time, it is important to consider the impact to clinical workflow when making key decisions throughout the EPCS initiative.
