Curating compliance: Implementing cybersecurity measures without disrupting healthcare workflow

Every single healthcare organization is at risk for a potential data breach. Read the headlines—or simply take a gander at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights’ so-called “Wall of Shame”—and you’ll see all manner of common cyberattacks levied against healthcare organizations. They include breaches due to stolen laptops, poorly secured storage servers, phishing incidents, and malware attacks. Attacks are used to gain access to protected health information (PHI) through unsecured devices and stolen credentials, or when hospital staff unintentionally click a bad hyperlink or downloaded malicious code.

The first step to increasing security without interrupting clinical workflows—and help strengthen your organization’s weakest security link—is to implement multifactor authentication (MFA) for remote network access, electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS), and other key healthcare tasks. It is a first line of defense to help ensure that users can be identified and authenticated before gaining access to sensitive information.
