Positive patient identification
Safety in healthcare starts first and foremost with treating the right patient.
And Imprivata PatientSecure, the market-leading touchless biometric palm vein authentication solution and an active component of the Imprivata digital identity framework, provides that critical one-to-one connection between patients and their medical records. It’s secure, quick, and easy-to-use.
Enrolled patients checking in at the registration desk – or even unconscious in A&E – can be positively identified via palm vein biometrics. It’s an extremely accurate and non-intrusive approach and the already-low risk of infection is reduced even further with our innovative touchless authentication scanner.
That creates a positive experience for patients and inspires greater clinician confidence as well.
Positive patient identification has always been important to reduce medical errors and improve patient safety. With Imprivata PatientSecure, healthcare organisations can:
- Enhance patient experience and streamline workflows with touchless authentication
- Eliminate duplicate and overlaid medical records

Biometric patient identification
Imprivata PatientSecure is a positive patient identification solution that creates a critical one-to-one match between individual patients and their unique medical records.
Using touchless biometric identification, Imprivata PatientSecure accurately retrieves digital health records of patients across all points of care, integrating directly with a healthcare facility's A&E, ADT, EMPI, and other HIS systems.
Overall, Imprivata PatientSecure has helped healthcare organisations to:
- Improve patient safety and reduce medical errors
- Enhance patient experience and streamline workflows with touchless authentication
- Eliminate duplicate and overlaid medical records
Less intrusive than other biometric technologies, palm vein biometrics are also among the most accurate. With touchless authentication, patient risk of infection is also reduced. Palm vein scanning can be used in any workflow, but is the only biometric that can be used for non-responsive patient identification. The solution can also be taken mobile on WOWs and tablets for bedside registration and other points of care.
In addition to being touchless, Imprivata scanners features an antimicrobial copper coating, which kills 99.9% of bacteria*. So, aside from routine hygiene practices, such as hand washing and disinfecting, copper adds another layer of hygiene to surfaces by continuously killing harmful bacteria and microbes. In addition, the scanners are easy to clean, fast, and intuitive to use.
Highly accurate biometric identification
Imprivata PatientSecure replaces traditional patient identifiers with biometric identification, a far more accurate patient identification approach. Biometrics do not change over the course of a lifetime and cannot be duplicated or forged. The solution can even be used to positively identify Jane and John Doe patients in critical care.
High patient adoption rates
Imprivata PatientSecure has a high patient success and adoption rate. Patients appreciate the non-intrusive process that does not require them to share any sensitive patient identifiers with hospital staff.
Easy deployment
Imprivata PatientSecure is easy to deploy and integrates seamlessly with all leading EHR vendors, self-service kiosk solutions, and IT infrastructures. Imprivata helps customers through every step of their deployment and enrollment process, providing continuing support for customers’ evolving needs.
Easy patient enrollment and identification process
The initial Imprivata PatientSecure enrollment process is quick and easy, requiring roughly the same amount of time as a routine paper check-in process. Biometrics are easy-to-use and less intrusive than traditional patient identifiers, making it an ideal form of identification for any patient, at any point of care.
Vastly improved patient experience and reduced wait times
Imprivata PatientSecure allows patients to access the right care, quickly. The solution streamlines check-in and registration processes by using fast and accurate biometric identification to retrieve patients’ medical records. When deployed with a self-service kiosk solution, Imprivata PatientSecure can reduce wait times even more significantly. Overall, Imprivata PatientSecure improves patient satisfaction, streamlines care delivery, and improves important patient satisfaction measures.
*Laboratory testing shows that, when cleaned regularly, antimicrobial copper surfaces kill greater than 99.9% of the following bacteria within 2 hours of exposure: MRSA, VRE, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and E. coli O157:H7. Antimicrobial copper surfaces are a supplement to and not a substitute for standard infection control practices and have been shown to reduce microbial contamination, but do not necessarily prevent cross contamination or infections; users must continue to follow all current infection control practices.
