The latest Imprivata webinar “Putting the brakes on shared mobile challenges”

In our latest webinar; “Putting the brakes on shared mobile challenges”, myself and a panel from Imprivata discuss the hot topics around the challenges to mobile adoption including, workflow considerations, security of shared devices and how to achieve successful staff engagement with new technologies. In short, how clinicians can thrive with share mobile devices.

I’m joined by Brad Gwyther, Customer Success Manager and Andy Wilcox, Senior Product Manager to discuss how healthcare organisations can successfully deploy mobile devices for care delivery.

Rewriting the rules in healthcare

Clinical leadership and healthcare organisations are starting to recognise that mobile technologies are rewriting the rules in the sector, acting as a catalyst for change in traditional clinical support environments and interactions with patients.

The traditional hub and spoke model of patient care is now complemented with new workflows that enable care at the bedside, with mobile devices providing clinicians with real-time access to patient information at the point of care. This enables more informed, timely decision-making in interactions with patients, with access to medical history or medication details. It helps to increase patient throughput and improve clinical satisfaction.

However, while shared mobile devices offer significant opportunities to enhance clinician productivity and improve care quality, they also present challenges for both users e.g. nurses and doctors, and IT teams.

Adopting mobile solutions – three key steps

The panel discusses the three key areas that healthcare organisations should consider when adopting mobile devices, highlighting that the priority for clinicians is always the patient, not the technology.

  1. Why go mobile – workflows, users and patient care

There are workflow considerations before rolling out new technology which may necessitate a review of the healthcare environment including;

  • How and where do users access patient information, at the bedside or in treatment rooms?
  • How are devices assigned to users and managed?
  • What sort of training may be required?
  1. Challenges – security, engagement and management

Security - mobile devices provide clinical staff with access to large amounts of sensitive patient data. For the organisation this means that there is an obligation to protect that data, while managing the usability of the device for the end user. Balancing data protection with ease of use is one of the toughest challenges in healthcare IT - but also one that must be met to ensure adoption.

Usability - usability is a key factor in successful adoption. Broken devices, poor or low battery power and manual authentications can all slow down workflows, creating frustration, insecure workarounds and barriers to adoption. Different digital literacy maturity amongst end users can also impact adoption and use.

Change fatigue -– The ongoing pressures facing healthcare systems globally e.g. capacity and workforce to care for aging societies with increasing chronic disease, pandemics, along with attempts to respond to them with developments in healthcare have meant new devices, applications and processes have been introduced over recent years. This bring about may have brought about ‘change fatigue’ amongst staff and clinicians. Early buy-in is essential.

Management of devices - the goal for the IT team is to create a personalised experience across shared devices and ensure the required security without compromising productivity. The challenge is also to support large numbers of devices in departments with already stretched resources across IT teams.

  1. Successful rollout, adoption and tracking

Learn from the panel how to address these management and adoption challenges to:

  • achieve positive adoption with early engagement amongst users
  • rollout mobile devices that enable secure access to clinical systems
  • manage user access across the IT estate
  • simplify device provisioning and tracking for IT teams.
