DigiCert Certificate

DigiCert certificates are digital credentials issued by DigiCert, a global certificate authority (CA) that provides identity validation and encryption services. As an issuer, DigiCert relies on defined identity verification processes, often in coordination with registration authorities or integrated partners, before binding the identities of individuals or organizations to cryptographic credentials. Each certificate contains a public key, a defined validity period, and a digital signature from the issuing authority, which together establishes trust between systems and users. DigiCert operates under strict certificate policies that govern identity verification and certificate management, making its certificates useful for enhancing security across regulated industries, including healthcare.

At a technical level, DigiCert certificates enable secure authentication and data exchange by linking a verified identity to a public key infrastructure (PKI). To explain in a simplified manner, when a certificate is presented, systems evaluate the issuer, confirm the validity period has not expired, check the revocation status, and validate the signature to ensure the certificate has not been altered. This process supports security solutions that offer high levels of identity assurance, which are essential in environments where sensitive data and regulated transactions are common. In healthcare, these assurances are particularly important for maintaining trust across distributed systems, devices, and users.

In healthcare and clinician workflows, DigiCert certificates can support secure access, authentication, and digital signing. One critical use case is Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS), where regulations require strong identity verification and auditability. Certificates can serve as part of multifactor authentication processes that help ensure only properly authenticated clinicians can sign prescriptions, while supporting secure attribution and auditability when combined with strong identity proofing, secure key management, and appropriate audit controls. By embedding identity into secure credentials, DigiCert certificates can support seamless yet compliant authentication processes that align with clinical efficiency requirements.

In Imprivata healthcare workflows, DigiCert’s role extended beyond certificate issuance to support individual identity proofing and identity binding for clinicians who required credentials for regulated activities such as EPCS. Within the Imprivata and DigiCert workflow, clinicians completed individual identity proofing as part of the enrollment process for EPCS. This process helped establish confidence in a clinician’s identity before binding that identity to the credentials used for authentication and electronic prescribing, supporting the identity assurance and security requirements associated with EPCS.

Imprivata integrated DigiCert certificates and individual identity proofing into healthcare-specific authentication workflows, helping clinicians securely enroll for EPCS and use approved authentication methods within clinical environments. This integration helped healthcare organizations support EPCS compliance, streamline clinician workflows, and incorporate strong authentication into daily care processes.

Imprivata will end support for DigiCert individual identity proofing on June 30, 2027, as it transitions to a new Individual Identity Proofing solution that supports its long-term strategy for scalable identity verification across its products. The new solution will become available with the Q4 2026 release of Imprivata Enterprise Access Management (EAM), providing an IAL2-compliant identity-proofing workflow and an improved enrollment experience. It will operate alongside DigiCert through June 30, 2027, giving customers time to plan and complete their migration. The DigiCert integration therefore represents an important part of Imprivata’s history of supporting secure, compliant identity proofing for EPCS, while the new Individual Identity Proofing solution provides the path forward for customers requiring these capabilities.
