Epic Rover
Epic Rover is a mobile application designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery in hospital settings. Developed by Epic Systems, one of the leading electronic health record (EHR) vendors, Epic Rover allows clinicians to use their mobile devices to access tools for medication administration, clinical review, specimen collection, placing orders, and other clinical documentation workflows. The application even allows clinicians to use device cameras to capture images for documentation in patient charts.
One of the primary advantages of Epic Rover is its ability to support Epic on the go by giving clinicians secure access to essential workflows wherever patient care takes place. Rather than returning to a workstation for every task, clinicians can review patient information, document care, administer medications, and complete other workflows directly from a mobile device, helping reduce delays and improve efficiency. To support these mobile experiences securely, Epic Rover supports OIDC login through OpenID Connect authentication, enabling streamlined, standards-based authentication that simplifies access while maintaining strong identity assurance.
To make the most of Epic Rover functionalities, healthcare organizations should implement access management solutions that allow clinicians to securely access crucial tools for patient care while maintaining patient privacy. Protected health information (PHI) is extremely valuable to bad actors, and must be strictly safeguarded. At the same time, clinicians need to be able to quickly access patient information and documentation tools at point of care, without having core workflows interrupted by technology friction.
Organizations can easily optimize EHR investments and Epic Rover features thanks to a seamless integration with Imprivata’s secure access solutions. Ensuring that only authorized users can access sensitive data, while simultaneously streamlining the login process, improves efficiency while reducing the cognitive burden on clinicians. For example, Epic Rover supports barcode scanning for medication administration — a feature that reduces the risk of medication errors and improves patient safety. Facilitating ease of use for this and other beneficial tools prevents clinicians from using unsecure workarounds, such as sharing login credentials, while freeing up time and energy that is better spent on patient care.
Face authentication enhances the usability and security of Epic Rover by streamlining how clinicians access mobile workflows throughout the day. Instead of relying on a numeric passcode, users can skip passcode entry entirely and unlock the screen with face recognition for immediate access to the application. This is particularly valuable in fast-paced clinical environments where repeated authentication is required between patient interactions. With face authentication, clinicians can quickly re-authenticate without interrupting care delivery, reducing friction while maintaining strong identity assurance. Because users enroll once and can then authenticate across shared devices, organizations can support flexible device models without compromising security or requiring repeated logins.
Imprivata Mobile Device Access enables secure, swift access to clinical mobile devices and tools, including Epic Rover, by combining mobile authentication, single sign-on, and advanced identity verification methods tailored for clinical workflows. Imprivata MDA also supports Epic Rover OIDC login, enabling a streamlined one-click login experience through OpenID Connect authentication that reduces login friction and helps clinicians access Epic Rover more quickly. In addition to enabling fast access via badge-tap technology, Imprivata provides face authentication capabilities, allowing clinicians to skip passcode entry and securely log in with facial recognition. This approach strengthens security while improving usability on shared devices, ensuring that healthcare organizations can protect patient data without slowing down care delivery.
