Alegent Health Turns to Imprivata for Secure Access to Electronic Medical Records in a Virtual Desktop Environment

Imprivata OneSign Provides More Than 11,000 Clinicians with Fast Access to Patient Data from Anywhere in the Health System

LEXINGTON, Mass.—February 16, 2010—Imprivata®, Inc. the employee access management company, today announced that Alegent Health, the largest not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare system in Nebraska, has successfully migrated its metro area hospitals to full electronic medical records (EMR) and secured its virtual desktop environment using Imprivata OneSign's healthcare access management solution. By leveraging Imprivata OneSign in conjunction with Siemens’ Soarian and Sun Ray Virtual Clients, Alegent Health enabled its medical staff and clinicians to securely access the patient records they need from anywhere.

Alegent Health wanted to transfer all patient data into electronic format as part of an initiative to increase data security while creating a more efficient organization for clinicians. As this information migrated online, the number of passwords that clinicians required to access patient data grew exponentially. This change forced doctors and nurses to sign in and out of several applications they needed throughout their shifts, which often took them away from the patients’ bedsides and required them to remember a myriad of complex passwords. To alleviate the hospital’s password management problems, the IT team at Alegent Health deployed Imprivata OneSign healthcare single sign-on (SSO) solution because of its appliance-based approach and its tight integration with other healthcare applications such as Siemens Soarian for EMR, Carefx Fusionfx for context management and Courion Account Courier for provisioning.

Following the deployment of OneSign, the IT department saw an opportunity to further streamline its organization through the introduction of a low-cost virtual desktop environment by deploying Sun Ray Virtual Display Clients, with software from ThinIdentity, and Smart Cards from Sun Microsystems. The Imprivata OneSign Platform integrated seamlessly with the Sun Ray Smart Cards, providing the staff with compliant and secure authentication and access to patient data.

“Convenient access to information is of the utmost importance to our clinicians and staff, so we needed a solution that would solve our password management issues without impacting workflows,” said Dr. Michael Westcott, chief medical information officer at Alegent Health. “The combination of Imprivata OneSign and Sun Ray Virtual Display Clients is a winning equation for ensuring clinician satisfaction, improved user productivity and increased security.”

Imprivata OneSign simplifies clinician authentication to applications and makes it easier for care providers to access patient data. OneSign easily integrates with all healthcare applications and includes support for shared workstations, roaming desktops, fast user switching, a broad range of integrated strong authentication options (proximity cards, finger biometrics, ID tokens) and password policy implementation and management.

“Hospitals are fast-paced environments and clinicians must have quick, easy access to the information they need to provide the highest quality care to their patients. But this access cannot come at the expense of compliance or security,” said Omar Hussain, president and CEO of Imprivata. “We are delighted that Alegent Health is using OneSign to strike that balance between user convenience and IT security. The fact that they are also taking advantage of OneSign’s seamless integration with their Sun Rays, for additional savings and improved efficiency, makes the implementation that much more impressive.”
