Mass lawmakers embrace electronic prescribing of controlled substances

Massachusetts lawmakers recently passed legislation that requires providers and pharmacies to switch to electronic prescribing of opioid medication by 2020, further validating the significant role technology can play in combatting our national prescription drug abuse epidemic.

Passed by the Mass. state House of Representatives, the bill represents the latest legislative push to create a more secure opioid distribution chain by requiring that prescriptions for controlled substances be completed electronically.

The final set of the Massachusetts regulations focus on restricting employee access to data, monitoring malicious activity on the network, and strong authentication protocols. A recent BankInfoSecurity article reported that the Massachusetts Data Protection Law has been delayed yet again, pushing the new effective date back to March 1, 2010. As part of the law, organizations are required to protect confidential data – social security numbers, driver license numbers and financial account/credit/debit card numbers – of Massachusetts citizens. The regulation covers all non-public data, regardless of how the company obtains the information.
