National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC)

The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) is a federal agency established in 1988 under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). Its primary mission is to regulate gaming activities on Indian lands and protect the interests of both Native American tribes and the public. The NIGC plays a crucial role in the oversight and regulation of tribal gaming, which has become a significant economic driver for many Native American communities. 

The NIGC is composed of three commissioners appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. These commissioners are responsible for setting policies, conducting investigations, and enforcing regulations to ensure that tribal gaming operations comply with federal laws and standards. The commission's regulatory framework is designed to prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the gaming industry, protect the rights of tribal governments, and ensure that gaming revenues are used for the benefit of tribal communities. 

One of the key functions of the NIGC is to approve and monitor Class II and Class III gaming activities. Class II gaming includes games such as bingo and certain card games, while Class III gaming encompasses casino-style games like slot machines and table games. The NIGC works closely with tribal governments to ensure that these gaming operations are conducted in a manner that is consistent with the IGRA and other federal regulations. This includes conducting regular audits, inspections, and investigations to verify compliance and address any issues that arise. 

The NIGC also provides technical assistance and training to tribal gaming regulators and operators. This support helps tribes build their capacity to manage and regulate their own gaming operations effectively. By fostering a strong regulatory environment, the NIGC helps to build trust and confidence among players, investors, and the broader public, which is essential for the long-term sustainability of tribal gaming.
